The airport as a locational advantage

For the region NordAllianz and the Bavarian capital city, the Munich Airport, opened in 1992, is extremely important for the labour market, tourism, economy, and quality of life. The Munich Airport (MUC) in the in the plane "Erdinger Moos" is the second-largest airport in Germany, with 34.5 million passengers (2008). The Munich Airport is, however, the leader in Europe when it comes to quality and popularity. In a global airport ranking published annually by the London aerospace research institute Skytrax, the Munich Airport is number four; only the Asian airports of Singapore, Seoul, and Hong Kong ranked higher. In 2010, the Munich Airport received the World Airport Award as Europe's best airport for the fifth time.

In terms of economic power, the municipalities of the NordAllianz are leading in Germany.

The following table shows the ranking of economic power of municipalities in the NordAllianz out of 440 administrative districts and urban districts in Germany. Economic power is derived from the factors purchasing power, gross domestic product, employment rate, percentage of aged in the population, and unemployment rate.
